The randomness of a true random number generator (TRNG) is one of the essential elements for device security. Intentional electromagnetic interference (IEMI) has been shown to degrade the randomness of TRNGs. To evaluate whether a TRNG is resistant to such attacks, a method has been proposed that involves obtaining output random number sequences and performing randomness tests. However, evaluating randomness by directly retrieving a random number sequence from the IC requires a dedicated output port. This can increase the risk of random number leakage. This article proposes a method to evaluate TRNG resistance to IEMI without the need for a special mechanism to output random number sequences. Specifically, we focus on the fact that the frequency of electromagnetic (EM) waves emitted from the TRNG changes over time, depending on the generated random numbers. We demonstrate that the resistance of a TRNG to IEMI can be evaluated noninvasively by applying the amplitude probability distribution (APD), which characterizes the probability distribution of frequency components. In our experiment, we conducted an attack by applying IEMI to a ring oscillator-based TRNG, which is widely used and can be configured only with digital circuits. We showed that a decrease in randomness can be detected by observing the EM waves emitted from the device. This detection is based on the difference in the slopes of the APD between the nonattack and attack states. |
